I really am happy that they didn't overdo Bertha's madness. That was one of the things that annoyed me about the 1997 BBC version; Bertha was *so* over-the-top that I remember the people watching with me starting to laugh. This time, you could still see shades of why Rochester found her so desirable. I think they may well have taken a few cues from Jean Rhys' book, Wide Sargasso Sea and tried to make her just a little bit more sympathetic even in her short scene.
