Hmm, like they were embarrassed by the possible intrusion of feeling. Yes--it's like you can see where Shakespeare is going to go, with that wonderful poise between mirth and sadness that you'll get elsewhere in the comedies ("No, sure, my lord, my mother cried. But then there was a star danced, and under that was I born." *sigh*), but it never quite makes it, in this play.
