So I know I'm ages behind everyone in the watching of Doctor Who but I just got through the Second Series finale. There were tears.



Although the insult war between the Daleks and the Cybermen was hilarious.

And Pete and Jackie! That did make me happy.

But the last bit on the beach was just heartbreaking. As it was obviously meant to be. Poor, poor Rose. And the Doctor, for that matter. I'd been spoiled for the return of the Daleks, but it was fairly minor in terms of massive spoilers. And I knew Rose was gone but she 'died' in a very different way from what I was necessarily expecting.

I think that's also part of what bothered me about Rose's arc in S2--the fact that she still thinks such a life isn't worth anything. After everything, even after Nine sending her home the first time to have a "fantastic" life, in the S2 finale (or was it "Army of Ghosts"? I can't remember), she's still saying that before she met the Doctor, nothing had happened to her, and the implication throughout the season is that she still thinks that she's nothing without the Doctor. She starts out in "The Christmas Invasion" saying "Without the Doctor, I'm useless," and when she's brave, she's brave because "someone's gotta be the Doctor," or because it's the thing he would do, and she just sort of stays there. Which is frustrating because I love Rose and think she's awesome, but I can't help feeling like *she* still thinks she's only worth something when she's with the Doctor. It's possible I've thought way too much about this, though, since I've been re-watching S2 lately.

I think it was Nine sending her home without giving her a choice in the matter, as if he were dismissing her out of hand. I do agree with you that Rose is wonderful on her own, but I find it interesting that she persists in the stubborn belief that she's nothing without the Doctor.

Yes--and it's funny, because in S1 it's Mickey who's terrified, and Rose who steps in and saves the world with nothing more than an old chain, and by the end of S2 it's Mickey who's decided he's not going to be limited by the Doctor's definition of him (the idiot, the tin dog), and Rose who's gotten stuck seeing herself as useless.

I should say that my first reaction to "Doomsday" was a lot more like "WHYYYYYY?!? *SOB*" than the screeds I've written here.
